The Spanish company Grupo Cobra, an integral part of the ACS group, has entrusted our teams of experts in spool construction with a contract for the prefabrication of 1,200 tonnes of piping for a renewable energy project in the United States.

This project “Crescent Dunes Solar Energy Project” is one of the most important in the world in thermo-solar electric generation with central tower. Located in Tonopah (Nevada, USA). This 124 MW plant is intended to supply 775,000 homes in the city of Las Vegas.

Our teams prefabricated these pipes in our workshops in Houston, Texas. Among these 1200 tonnes of piping (2345 ” spools ” – 16,000 “Welding Units”), 155 tonnes were made of 347H type stainless steels and 190 tonnes of grade P (T) 9.1 alloy steels, which present a vey sophisticated welding procedure.

This procedure includes a very rigorous control of the preheating and the temperature between passes and a heat treatment of hydrogen removal followed by a thermal expansion treatment.
